Marine Wilderness

South Africa’s coastline is incredibly biodiverse and is home to an impressive array of species. There is no better classroom than the ocean itself. At the Marine Protection Project we believe it is important for our interns to make a emotional connection with our seas to fuel their motivation to conserve our beautiful blue.

During this once in a lifetime experience we offer our interns the opportunity to combine both our projects in Mossel Bay with research on the road where you can explore a breadth of different ecosystems. During the two weeks

we spend on the road travelling up the east coast we head to world famous marine dive sites like Aliwal Shoal and Sodwana Bay. Throughout the internship you will be accompanied by our marine conservationists to maximise your experience.

South Africa is a biodiversity hotspot for sharks so expect lots of action from our shark friends, but like our other programmes, this internship is so much more than just sharks. This is your opportunity to dive with turtles, contribute to coral reef conservation and witness whales breaching along South Africa’s stunning coastline.

Experience Durban

Our Durban internships run from January – March year and are kickstarted with two weeks at our base in Mossel Bay where interns get the chance to get a flavour of our home projects, including penguin and seabird rehabilitation, collecting data on great white sharks for our artificial intelligence project and participate local community outreach. After your introduction to life in Mossel Bay we head up the east coast for a change of scenery and visit some of the top shark diving locations in the world. But it’s not just about sharks, during our Durban internships you’ll learn about tropical reef ecology, witness our changing ocean with your own eyes and obtain the knowledge you need to make a difference to marine conservation.

Excursions available on our Durban internships:

  •  Scuba diving in Protea Banks, Aliwal Shoal and Sodwana Bay.
  •  Coral reef surveys
  •  Scuba diving certification
  •  Lectures on shark biology and ecology, and tropical fish biology
  •  Turtle hatchling tour in iSimangaliso Wetland World Heritage Site
  •  Whale watching in Plettenberg Bay

If you are unable to join us for our Durban internship it is possible to go on excursions to Durban on weekends during our normal internship subject to the number of interns who want to take part in this activity.

We recommend being Advanced Open Water diver certified to get the most out of the Durban internship due to the challenging dives. Before the two week internship in Durban you can refresh your skills or become certified in Mossel Bay with our partners, Go Dive Mossel Bay. When enquiring please inform us of your diving capabilities so that we can give you the information you need.
